The first National Steering Committee Meeting of the 2020 National Population and Housing Census kickstarted today in Port Moresby. Chaired by the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), members of the Steering Committee discussed how government agencies, institutions, development partners can best collaborate in the delivery of the 2020 Census as a whole of government approach. Members present in today’s meeting comprised of Heads of Government agencies, institutions and development partners. Theses entities include; Department of National Planning and Monitoring, Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs, Department of Labour and Industrial Relations, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, PNG Defence Force, PNG Civil and Identity Registry, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the National Statistical Office, the University of Papua New Guinea, National Research Institute, the United Nations (PNG) and the Asian Development Bank. Discussions centered on how best financial and human resources can be mobilized to undertake the 2020 census operations in the country successfully. Besides, adequate funding for the 2020 Census remains a challenge from the discussions and is a work in progress for the Committee to identify options that could alleviate costs. The 2020 National Population and Housing Census is a whole of government approach coordinated by the National Statistical Office with the technical support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
