Port Moresby 26 August 2019

A two-week Provincial Census Coordinators (PCC) Workshop from the 12-23rd of August in Kokoda Motel outside Port Moresby was a success. Twenty-three Provincial Census Coordinators around the country who have participated in the workshop acquired relevant knowledge on how census operations will be administered at the provincial levels.

Organized by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the workshop discussions centered on how the operations of the 2020 census will be administered from the national level down to the provincial levels.

Following an overview of the 2020 Census operations by the NSOs Field Operations Team, key discussions held included; census field preparatory activities and strategies to be implemented, the PCCs’ roles and responsibilities in 2020 Census operations, census questionnaires and relevance of census data.

Discussions also centered on census publicity, census staff recruitment and training, coordination and security activities, procurement and logistical arrangements and Financial Management Guidelines.

The PCC’s have expressed that the workshop was very helpful in equipping them with relevant knowledge of how census operations can be coordinated back in their respective provinces.

During the workshop, the participating PCCs from all provinces in the country were also requested to develop and submit their Provincial Census financial Budgets which will be expanded in the census operations. The budgets have been submitted which will then be deliberated by the NSO Census Project to ensure appropriate funds are available for the rollout of the program.

Papua New Guinea is at the pre-enumeration preparation stage with a lot of preparatory activities in the coming months; one of which is the Household Listing and Mapping Operation. Household Listing is a systematic way of compiling a listing of all dwellings, households, and other structures and main features within a Census Unit (villages and communities in both rural and urban areas).

The Mapping Operations will show locations of all Census Units. The maps will show both administrative and statistical boundaries important for statistical data collections in the enumeration exercise.

The workshop ended on a remarkable note with all PCCs signing their contracts of duty in the presence of the Census 2020 Management. NSO’s Acting National Statistician, Mr. John Igitoi, in closing the workshop, thanked the PCCs for their participation and encouraged them to provide their utmost support in the 2020 census operations.
